What is CARE Developmental Play Therapy?
CARE Developmental Play Therapy is based upon the teachings of psychologist, Viola
Brody, Ph.D. an early pioneer in the play therapy field. Developmental Play Therapy (DPT)
was formulated in the 1960’s and uses intentional first play activities with a child. It focuses
on the reciprocal nature of an adult-child relationship while helping the child to build healthy
primary and secondary attachment relationships. Dr. Courtney, a student of Brody’s, draws
upon her background in creative art play therapy modalities to offer a unique, engaging and
experientially based training. CARE stands for training that is established upon foundations that
are Competency based & Attachment based & Relationship based & Experientially based.
The overall goal of CARE DPT is to ultimately help foster healthier
interpersonal relationships for children and their families.
Course Description:
This intensive four-day workshop will teach participants how to facilitate and
structure DPT sessions in three ways:1. Individually with children 2. DP therapist-
parent-child guided, and 3. Group play therapy “Circle Time”. Participants will
