About Janet A. Courtney, Ph.D., LCSW, RPT-S

Janet A. Courtney, Ph.D., LCSW, RPT-S is Director of Developmental Play & Attachment Therapies, Inc. a center established for training professionals in a variety of Play Therapy techniques in working with children; and also to promote more conscious and connected relationships between parents, care-givers and children.

Dr. Courtney’s Doctoral dissertation focused on the training of practitioners in Developmental Play Therapy where research outcomes demonstrated that training helped to sensitize the practitioner to the attachment needs of the child as well as to the practitioner’s own needs of attachment.

Since 1998, Dr. Courtney has taught a variety of Advanced Practice courses as an Adjunct Professor at Barry University School of Social Work, Miami Shores, Florida. Courses taught include Practice with Children; Advanced Family Practice; Advanced Practice with Individuals; Human Sexuality; Family Therapy; and Psychopathology. 

Additionaly, Dr. Courtney has held the positions of President, Vice President, and Immediate Past President with the Florida Association for Play Therapy (FAPT) through the years of 1998-2008; and resides as the Chair of the Viola Brody Committee through FAPT and as a member of the FAPT Annual conference committee.

Dr. Courtney lectures nationally and internationally on the topics of Developmental Play Therapy, Earth Science & metaphorical interventions, general Play and Art practice, Family Play Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy.  She has acted as a consultant to several Florida based children’s agencies, and supervises clinicians seeking Florida board licensure, as well as, those seeking Certification as a Registered Play Therapist with the Association for Play Therapy (APT).

Since, 1989, Dr. Courtney has had a private psychotherapy practice located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida dedicated to working with children and families, improving relationships and quality of life.
